Hilton Head Guidebook
Home away from home, Hilton Head Island, has been my family’s summer getaway spot for the past thirty years. The tradition began in the late 80’s when my mother visited the island for the first time with her mom, dad, and brothers. Here, they all fell in love with the unique, relaxing atmosphere that evokes visitors to step away from their everyday, busy lives to enjoy what is truly important; family and friends.
Ever since I was a baby, I have made the twelve-hour drive with my family from Dayton, Ohio to Hilton Head Island. This annual car ride marks the beginning of two fun filled weeks in which I am able to grow closer to those in my life that have impacted the person I am today. In fact, my fondest memories with my family are those at the Sea Pines Beach Club competing in bocce, in Harbour Town singing (mostly laughing) under the Liberty Oak, on the bike paths playing Bob Marley songs through the speaker resting in my bicycle basket, and near Crazy Crab, sitting on the red rocking chairs, listening to live music, as old stories are retold by family members.
Storytelling keeps memories alive and plenty of narratives have begun in Hilton Head. Through life’s obstacles and accomplishments, Hilton Head has always been a place where my family can come together and reflect on the year. When love ones pass away, they still feel close due to impressions of them left behind on different locations throughout the island. I see my grandmother at The Studio, eating rocky road ice cream under the Harbour Town Lighthouse, dancing with my grandpa to the sound of Jimmy Buffett, and sitting at the beach, reading her favorite book.
Hilton Head is so special to me. There is no place I would rather spend the summer days than with my family, enjoying South Carolina’s unique escape. To capture this special destination, I created a guidebook by researching and photographing all of the places that I make sure to visit when I am on the island. I hope you enjoy reading and learning more about Sea Pines in Hilton Head. Maybe you will make your own memories on the island one day!
